Product Description
The 1998 release from INVISIBLE SKRATCH PIKLZ turntable wizard MIXMASTER MIKE. Anti-Theft Device blends in vocal snippets from the likes of Guru, Ice Cube, and the Beastie Boys. Mike clearly has skills on the wheels of steel that are undeniable. ''If he were a guitarist, he'd be Jimmy Page.''

Mix Master Mike is a world-champion turntable battler, and it shows on his debut recording. The first half is full of furious high-energy scratching, complete with cartoon imagery and bratty jokes; it's an old-school hip-hop party that takes place in the Beastie Boys' 'hood. It's entirely appropriate that Mike, one of San Francisco's famed Invisibl Skratch Piklz, contributes to three tracks on the Beasties' Hello Nasty and replaces DJ Hurricane in their live show; they share a manic energy. But the second half of Anti-Theft Device offers some smoother, contemplative tracks--it's on par with the dense introspection of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... but with more flow and less virtuoso scratching. It shows that the triple M is only beginning to work out all his ideas. --Martin Johnson

Tiny fragments of records are chopped up into a scratchy soup that gets ladled up in 31 variably-sized portions. There are no songs as such, just mad beat patterns, disparate vocal sounds distorted into the middle of next week and moody atmospherics skittering around in search of a purpose. It's all tremendously admirable and very, very clever. -- New Musical Express
[Mix Master Mike's] scratch riffs can go head-to-toe with Jimmy Page, and when he locks the groove down, the beats are positively neck popping. -- Entertainment Weekly
